“The thought of being able to exchange intellectual ideas in an environment outside my own has always been very appealing to me. At the same time, I have always been interested in research, therefore, I wanted to find a graduate program where I could sharpen my research skills and be encouraged to investigate my own ideas. Attending the School of Education, undertaking the EdD program, at the University of Adelaide has made that desire into a reality!
I always tell friends that that the best part of my School of Education experience was my supervisors, the late Professor Kevin Marjoribanks and Dr Margaret Secombe. Their excellent supervision and their sense of humour made the study most enjoyable and edifying. Their effort in expending time to teach the finer points and skills that were needed to become an independent researcher was invaluable. My participation at the various courses offered by the School only served to further provide a solid experience in ‘how to critically evaluate research’, and ‘how to write academically’! Overall, there was a tremendous willingness from the School to support me when I needed it most.
However, it was not all work or thesis. I formed many lasting friendships through the School with other staff and graduate students, the church I attended, and living at Kathleen Lumley College. I met people from all nationalities that I would never have dreamt I could, learnt about their culture as I shared mine, built bridges for future research of different disciplines, laughed, and travelled around Australia.
Today, as I look back, my years with the University of Adelaide not only prepared me well for my current role as an academic and researcher, but shall remain the most rewarding ‘journey’ of my educational endeavors." |
