Congratulations to the 2008 Scholarship Winners

The School of Education is pleased to congratulate the following 2008 Scholarship recipients:

  • Mr Philip Brodie (BTch/BA program) awarded the Indigenous Youth Leadership Programme (IYLP) Tertiary Scholarship, national initiative funded by DEEWR.
  • Dr Jeffrey Buchanan (GradDip in Ed program) awarded the Mason Family scholarship in the Communication of Science 2008.
  • Ms Marie Klein (GradDip in Ed program) awarded the Mason Family scholarship in the Communication of Science 2008.

We wish them all the best and a successful year in 2008.

2008 Conference on Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship

This is one of South Australia’s annual celebratory events for education, and we hope it will be an opportunity to recognise outstanding teachers and teaching. To be held on July 4 2008

The one-day conference seeks to:

  • Present and showcase innovative and exemplary teaching practices/praxis;
  • Offer teachers and educators an opportunity to share school-based research and professional learning;
  • Offer opportunities for prospective teachers (those currently in pre-service teacher education programs) to connect, collaborate and extend their learning;
  • Celebrate excellent teaching practices in South Australia; and
  • Promote the scholarship of teaching and professional learning in South Australian schools and education institutions.

The Vice Chancellor Professor James McWha will launch the 2nd Annual Conference, and the keynote/plenary address will be presented by Professor Roger Thomas, Director Centre for Indigenous Research and Studies.  At 5:00pm Professor Pascale Quester, Dean, Faculty of the Professions will introduce the speaker for the Kevin Marjoribanks Memorial Lecture, Jury Professor Penny Boumelha, Head of the Discipline of English at the University of Adelaide. Moreover, The Hon Dr Jane Lomax Smith, Minister for Education and Children’s Services will present the University of Adelaide’s awards for recognition of teaching excellence awards to outstanding teachers.

Exciting New Partnership for School of Education

The School of Education signs a Memorandum of understanding with Henley High School. This pilot internship scheme is an exciting initiative because it includes a close and long term association of pre-service students with their school. There are mutual benefits and responsibilities for total emersion in school life for our students and additional opportunities for professional development for Henley High School staff members.

The School of Education is pleased to congratulate the following recepients of the 2008 DECS Country Practicum Scholarships; Jeff Buchanan, Hannah Cockshell, Sarah Heaslip, Anthony Hobbs, Joshua Kelly, Cynthia Psorakis, Katerina Steven, Fiona Muggleton, Beck Pollard, Sui-Guan Ho and Gemma Brunckhorst.  Also our congratulations to Clint Gamlin and Ruth Callcott for receiving the New Beginnings Scholarship. We wish them all the best and a successful year in 2009.

The School of Education has now relocated to the building right next to our previous office:

All initial enquiries can be made at the Undergraduate Student Centre on the Ground Floor of 10 Pulteney Street. Entry to the Student Office is via Pulteney Street. Office hours are Tuesday-Thursday 9am-5pm and Fridays 10am-12pm.

The second annual Kevin Marjoribanks Memorial Lecture

On Thursday 4th of October, Professor Graeme Hugo presented the second annual lecture in memory of Kevin Marjoribanks, titled "Attracting, Retaining and Empowering Quality Teachers: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities".

SEAMEO Forum

Dr Sivakumar Alagumalai will represent the University of Adelaide at SEAMEO/Bangkok Forum. He will chair the workshop of the Special Maths and Science High Schools, and lead the discussion on curricula and assessment procedures.

Country Teaching Practice

Third year students have recently completed a very successful Country Teaching Practice. Feedback indicates that this was a positive experience for most students, and has changed the whole approach to country placements for many.

Establishment of new research group

The School of Education has initiated, through the Kevin Marjoribanks Memorial Lecture a Joint DECS – University of Adelaide/School of Education Research Group

Extension of the SMaRTE portal

Dr Sivakumar Alagumalai (Head of School) and Dr Darmawan I Gusti (Co-ordinator of Masters Program, ICT and Science Education) from the School of Education are working with Ms Evie Ledger, Human Race - Sustainable Regions Project Manager (Centre for Health Promotion, Women's and Children's Hospital) and Mr Tim Jarvis, Antarctica Exploration Project (Associate Director, URS Australia Pty Ltd)  to extend the SMaRTE portal to empower pre-service teachers of science, mathematics and ICT in the use of 'rich interactive real' datasets for innovating lesson plans and activities for their classrooms.
The interactive website being developed by Mr Simon Skrodal and Mr Francisco Ben, (doctoral scholars) will house data and information funded by the Faculty of Humanities, School of Medicine and the Faculty of the Professions. The SMaRTE portal aims to enhance Science, Mathematics and Technology education by providing a repository for current information and research, strengthening the nexus between theory, practice and research, initiating closer partnership between the disciplines, and enabling better provision of professional development topics and more collaborative opportunities for teachers and students. 

5th Asia TEFL International Conference 2007 – Kuala Lumpur

Nina Maadad (Lecturer) and Sasikalla Nallaye (Doctoral Scholar) have recently returned from this Conference. Nina and Sasikalla both presented papers on ‘Professional English Language for Teachers’ focussing on the importance of a teacher’s need to develop language fluency and incorporating relevant teaching methodologies in the classroom to meet students’ needs.

UNESCO

Dr Siva Alagumalai (Head of School) has been invited to Chair the UNESCO Asian Development Bank-funded Seminar to examine Science/Maths/ICT in Asia. The Dean’s Forum will be held in Sri Lanka from 23-26 June.

In early August 2007 Siva has been asked to Chair for SEAMEO Science/Maths project in Bangkok. This involves the six Asian countries re-thinking their Science/Maths/ICT Curricula.

Development of Professional Development courses

Mr Simon Skrodal has worked with PCE in advancing a short professional development course on 'Video Paper'. It is available for professionals and teachers in South Australia who are keen on utilising the 'state-of-art' delivery system. Details are available on the PCE website. Ms Nina Maadad and Ms Sasikala Nalaya are developing a joint professional development course with Ms Erica Smith (PCE) for delivery to Malaysia’s Heads-of-Schools and teachers.

SimTecT 2007 Brisbane

PhD students Francisco Ben and Simon Skrodal each presented their refereed papers at SimTecT 2007, Australasia's premier simulation and training technologies conference.

Under the conference theme 'Simulation - Improving Capability and Competitiveness' Mr Ben spoke on the use and impact of Learning Objects (in simulation form) in Education while Mr Skrodal presented his research on the development of a simulation training tool for pre-service teachers (a.k.a. the Virtual Classroom Simulation).

The presentations drew much interest from a range of sectors, including education and defence, for their usefulness and trans-disciplinary potential. The University of Adelaide was only one of a few universities represented at the event, re-emphasising our university's image as a premier institution for innovative research.

Meetings were held with Professor Siow from the University of Malaysia and Mrs Siva, a student-agent with whom the university deals.

Master of Educational Studies – NgeeAnn – Singapore

The first component of this intensive course, ‘Educational Enquiry’, has now been completed. This was presented by Dr Sivakumar Alagumalai and students have been very enthusiastic about the course. Two more components will be taught in Singapore, before the end of the year: ‘Curriculum Design & Evaluation’ by Dr Christopher Dawson, and ‘Neuroscience and Education’ by Dr Robert Matthews.

Country Placement program

The School, through the excellent work of Dr Stephanie Burley, Dr Margaret Scott, Ms Naomi Scott and Ms Kali Sercombe, has been successful in providing opportunities for students to undertake their practicum placement in the country. Thirteen students have been granted 'Country Scholarships' by the Department of Education and Children Services. This is a significant achievement for the School, and the efforts of staff members are greatly appreciated.

Seminar in Malayasia

The Schools of Education in University of Malaya and University of Adelaide jointly organised the ‘Technology and realities in mathematics and science education: Malaysian and Australian experiences’ Seminar on Saturday 21 April 2007. About 190 staff, postgraduate students and colleagues from the Ministry of Education, Malaysia, participated in the seminar held at the Faculty of Education, University of Malaya. A number of joint papers, involving staff from both universities, were presented.

MOU agreement signed with the University of Malaya

Prof John Taplin, PVC(I), signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Yang Bahagia Professor Dato, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International) representing the University of Malaya. The special occasion was witnessed by a number of Deans, and indicated a start to various collaborations namely:

(a)     Joint research activities, including seminars, conferences and public lectures
(b)     Exchanges of academic staff and students
(c)     Joint publications (research and teaching material)
(d)     Collaborative degree programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels
(e)     PhD programs and short professional development courses (in-house) for
          University of Malaya and University of Adelaide staff
(f)      Joint quality assurance and benchmarking

MEd Studies commences in Ngee-Ann

The first course for the MEd Studies delivered through NAAEC will start on Friday, 18 May. Whilst in Singapore, Siva will explore with colleagues in NAAEC and the Singaporean Ministry of Education initiatives to market further the program to teachers.

Research funding announced

Dr I Gusti Darmawan has been successful in his application for a University Learning and Teaching Development Grant. His project entitled “Advancing collaborative learning pedagogy with team learning systems” was allocated $25,000 for 2007.

Master of Educational Studies program to begin in Ngee-Ann in 2007

The Board of Directors for the Ngee-Ann Adelaide Education Centre in Singapore (NAAEC) have approved the commencement of the University of Adelaide’s Master of Educational Studies program. Two scholarships have been released by the Singapore education authority for their teachers, and 15 students will soon commence in the program.
